The Process

Obtaining a driver's permit or license involves several steps, which vary depending on the age and circumstances of the applicant. At New Prudential Driving School, we are here to help guide our students through the process, from beginning to end. Here is an overview of the process for obtaining a permit and license for teenagers:

• At the age of 15, teenagers can begin taking Driver's Education.
• To obtain a permit, teenagers must complete Driver's Education and pass the written test at the DMV. The following documents are required: DMV application, original birth certificate or valid California ID or U.S. Passport, Social Security Number, Driver's Education Completion Certificate (OL 237), 2 proofs of residency documents, and $45 application fee.
• Once the written test is passed, the student will receive their permit, which is not valid until they take their first behind-the-wheel lesson with a certified driving school.
• Students must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a driving school and hold their permits for 6 months before they can go back to the DMV to take their driving test and receive their provisional license.
